Didn’t Zuck start FB to rate his female college classmates? It absolutely tracks. He’s always been a creep. Seriously though, I’m glad you wrote this bc I’ve been wanting to break my own Instagram addiction and this was the push I needed.

A large corporation is prioritizing profits over mental wellbeing???? Shocker. This isn’t even “alleged”, this is pretty common knowledge

Until Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is fixed, nothing will happen to these platforms. That's what people and the powers that be should be talking about.

My teens struggled with and then mostly abandoned Snapchat. My older daughter felt ick about the pressure to continue a 300+ day snap streak with a former friend that she would not speak to irl. I was proud of her for that - she moved to Insta, not sure if it is better but she seems to use it in a healthy way. She invited me to follow (but dare not comment!) and a lot of the comments seem positive and/or nontoxic insider references.

Personally I had a bad Facebook comment problem and limited myself to private groups, then not much at all, but the urge seems to be returning. “People are wrong on the internet! Must post and correct. “

Really great and informative piece. Finally committed to getting off Meta after using their products throughout my entire teenhood, and pieces like this prove that so much is and always has been really, really wrong with big tech. Terrible stuff. Thanks so much for writing.
