Great post! There’s a reason the zombies stop being scary after Season 2 of The Walking Dead. The humans are more scary.

Right now AI is an existential threat. The military almost started WW3 because AI went rogue. We can simply unplug...but what is the root problem? The problem is capitalism...cooperation is not socialism, its humanity and the planet. Everyone is "racing" to get there for what reason? Because of other, because we need that "competitive edge." AI is proving the human cooperation is essential to our survival! The single cell creatures even figure it out billions of years ago when they joined to more complex organisms.

"The people responsible ... created autonomous malicious software and then failed to closely monitor it, resulting in it doing something both foreseeable and bad.": True.

This kind of thing has a long history. For example, that description would apply about equally well to the Morris "worm" of 1988* (which I personally remember, because I was a staff programmer in the Berkeley computer science department at the time).

Robert Morris was convicted of a felony. So when will Sam Altman or anyone else at OpenAI be prosecuted for the Hugging Face hack? Oh, that's right, Morris was a lowly graduate student, whereas Altman et al. are rich, so laws don't apply to them. In the USA, accountability is for the little people.
